Children are our reward, our blessing aren’t they? Today we launch another Mother’s Day Giveaway and as we celebrate the Birth-Day of your Motherhood, I truly, simply want to bless you! Let’s pray!

Lord Jesus, we offer you our deepest thanks for the gifts that each of our children are. Thank you for the privilege of being called to Motherhood! We acknowledge it is a high calling indeed. And we ask that you would walk with us as we seek to serve you alone in our calling. Guide our every decision and give us strength in hard times to make wise decisions as mothers. Help us to be more concerned for our children’s souls than what is on their report cards. Help us to see our children for the gift they are but also the sinner they are so as not to neglect our role to disciple them in knowing you. Lastly Lord, use us as your ambassadors in our marriages and in our homes. May we be aware of the needs in our community, family and church and rise up to meet them. May we as women choose to embrace a biblical perspective on the season of pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood and bring you glory as we persevere in this life! All to your glory, all for your purpose we offer ourselves as your humble daughters and sisters. Lord, bring unity where their is division, bring love and acceptance where their once was judgement and condemnation, and help us to learn how to grieve and rejoice together as sisters in your Kingdom. Together we celebrate the bond you have given us as Mothers… thank you!

Now for the giveaways!

The Mission-Minded Child is a practical book to encourage Christian parents and teachers placed in the strategic position of impacting the next generation.

As a guide to world missions, The Mission-Minded Child is filled with facts, information, and tools for teaching. It focuses on the “why” of missions–including our Biblical basis, historical heritage, and the world’s need–and contains over 25 mini-missionary biographies, motivational mission stories, classic poems, hymns, and hundreds of easy-to-use ideas. The Mission-Minded Child will inspire teachers and parents to look for God’s potential in their child, “release” their little one to God for His purposes, and “raise” their child to fulfill God’s specific mission, whatever that might be. As a resource tool, this book will be referred to again and again.

Homeschooling offers parents the best opportunity to shepherd their children both academically and spiritually. Yes. It’s worth it. But do you ever feel as if your life is “all homeschool—all the time?” Do you ever wonder where the girl your husband married went? This book is for every mom who has collapsed into bed at the end of the day, looked into the eyes of her husband and promised “tomorrow” she’d have time for him. Trouble is, tomorrow finds her more exhausted than the day before. If you have ever felt caught between the demands of homeschooling your children and meeting the needs of your husband, you’re not alone. Read and discover how even a busy homeschool mom can make time to nurture her marriage. It’s not as hard as you think—and more important than you may realize.

We hope that you will join our family tradition and try the Juju Band on your newborns and infants. Juju Bands are used for 2 different purposes. First, it is used on the Newborn as a shield to protect from constant contact of diapers and clothing. This helps reduce the likelihood of irritation and infection. The Newborn Navel Protector also helps give your baby the perfect “innie” belly button. Second, the Infant Belly Binder helps relieve colic and soothe fussy babies. The snug fit calms and comforts even the most finicky infants.

Did you round-up the other kids on the block and assign roles, change your names, and pretend to play life. I sure did! I remember back to my 2nd-4th grade summers. Trading off whose garage, attic, or basement we would take over . A few friends and I would play a summer long game of “house.” It was awesome! I lived for it. We would set it all up, totally take over a garage and compile all our toys– committed to sharing all summer. Life was good. When I wanted to go to the grocery store, Lisa would babysit. When she went on a date with her “husband,” I would. My idea of motherhood was a dream. Cuddling babies, changing their diapers, cooking food, folding clothes–it was all a dream and I looked forward to playing over and over again every day.

Little did I know how hard motherhood would be as well. Not that I don’t enjoy it– I do! But I had no idea that in reality, your babies grew up and had opinions and minds of their own… that it actually took training, discipling, and work to raise up a child. When I was a little girl… my babies never grew and life was simple. I never had more dishes than I wanted to pretend to wash, I never had to deal with the real pain that we can experience in this life. No, my idea of motherhood was a dream.

What I didn’t rehearse was how to take care of mama so she can take care of others. I didn’t rehearse planning out “quiet time with the Lord.” I didn’t play {practice} talking about Jesus and discipling my children. I didn’t ever envision that there would ever be moments when you felt desperate or tired, alone, or spiritually hungry. But those times do come for every mom, don’t they?

This week we have a few fun giveaways going on, so make sure you visit us every day and enter! Today we are launching the “Mother’s Day Giveaway” with 19 other websites and blogs! My prayer is that you are truly blessed. One lucky mama is going to be blessed with a ton of books to help feed her spiritually and mentally {which is often the thing we struggle to spend time doing when we are busy caring for our blessings, right}. But more so, I hope you visit the blogs that are co-hosting this giveaway with me. They are sweet ladies… gifted in many different areas and I am certain you will find encouragement from every one of them if you take the time to glean. So go be blessed… check them out, but before you go remember to scroll down and enter the giveaway!

While I would have loved to review more of the books for you, like those on Marriage and Improving your sex life, this week has been busy enough having just spoke at a conference, getting ready for another one, getting next weeks giveaways ready, and life!

Since so many women have shared awesome reviews of different sections of the ebook bundle. So I thought, even though I only get credit for the purchases made here, it is more important to me that you don’t miss out on this incredible offer. So I have decided I would point you to their reviews, in case you were still deciding.

When I was invited to sign up to be on the team for the Lead Your Family Like Jesus Launch Team… my initial reaction was… oh man I don’t know if I can do that right now… I just launched my first self-published book also, and I am tuckered out. BUT, the title alone justified me looking into it. I thought to myself, I love this message already! This is a like-minded message! For those of you who know Isaac and I personally, you know He is a visionary leader focused on magnitude of mission and He leads me into action all the time.

I was drawn to this book simply because the main mission here at Leaving a Legacy is to empower, inspire and equip families with tools to truly engage their roles as leaders in their homes and communities. “We are all leaving a legacy, intentionally and unintentionally, right?!” This book is a great tool and resource to do all of those things which are so near and dear to my heart.

What can compare to having the wisdom from two men who have been married for 45 and 50 years and a woman who has been married for over 23 years share with you what they have learned about Leading their Families modeled after the way Jesus led.

I am actually going to incorporate two different posts on this book because it is so revolutionary for families today to be raising up the next generation intentionally. The guidance that Ken Blanchard, Tricia Goyer, and Phil Hodges offer in this book is priceless wisdom.

This book is now officially in my top five parenting books to recommend along with Shepherding a Child’s Heart, Give them Grace, Don’t Make Me Count to Three, and Revolutionary Parenting. Lead Your Family Like Jesus is different in that it incorporates stories {examples} of what leading your family could look like while giving the freedom for you to truly dream and make your own visions, goals and mission. Lead Your Family Like Jesus teaches with biblical examples as well as Titus 2closeTitus 2

examples from the three authors personal lives. As leaders, visionaries and parents, they have taken what I have dreamed of trying to do here at Leaving a Legacy and made a very tangible book leading others in leadership training helping them to think long term and generationally! “It’s not a textbook, it’s a collection of stories and advise!” pg.4, Introduction

Here are a few of my favorite quotes:

“Any time you seek to influence the thinking, behavior, or development of another person, you take on the role of a leader.” Ken Blanchard

“In too many families love has been distorted to “you don’t love me unless you [fill in the blank],” rather than the unconditional loving that Jesus modeled. Self-promotion (pride) and self-protection (fear) have replaced love and vulnerability. We’re afraid to give our whole hearts to others because we don’t want to be hurt. Indifference moves in and intimacy is replaced with isolation.”

I especially love the concept of checking ones EGO as a parent! They actually offer a FREE EGO assessment here! I love the two distinctions between EGO {Edging God Out} & EGO {Exalting God Only}! Isn’t that awesome?!

“Is fear or pride motivating your parenting?” pg.25

In this section of the book they focus in on our heart intentions as parents! Love that! How many times do I share that in Redeeming Childbirth? The heart is ALL God cares about… not the performance! Amen! To really exhort and edify they offer some pinpointing questions in what they call the “So That” test to really get to the heart of the problem. I love this part… you just need to get the book.

“If you do not first seek the Kingdom of God, you never will seek it.” Soren Kiekgaard

“Pride-filled parents tend to be quick to judge, quick to take offense, quick to speak, quick to push blame away and pull praise closer.” pg.28

Here you can see Tricia Sharing about a fantastic part of the book putting “posit’s” on things… to help your perspective! Love this!

Here is my heart- raw- honest- and totally just me.

Below are a few of the opening prayers in the New Testament books of the Bible. I have written out the verses, emphasized what convicted me most, written a basic observation and then added in a lesson/question which you could talk through with your children.

Here is a pdf of the verses to print out: PrayingLikePaul

Over the past year God has been bringing me back to the prayers of Jesus, Paul, and the saints. I have been increasingly convicted and challenged spiritually to be praying more intentionally for my brothers and sisters in Christ, those I know, and those I do not know personally. I was compelling to pray for those who would be reading here and my book as well. I have felt prompted by the Spirit to pray that they would be drawn more to the Lord, to be challenged in an edifying way to seek God more in every compartment of their lives.

As I have been meditating more and more on this, God has been revealing His truths about how important prayer is, but also revealing to me a false authenticity that I think exists in the larger church today. I have been in the “Christian Community” all of my life, that being said… I have failed to be consistent in praying in the Spirit like Paul for all my brothers and sisters in body. I have had deep seasons where I have prayed more than others, and honestly have certain friendships that are truly more Christ centered than others, but my heart has an unquenchable yearning for more of these deep friendships. They are SO Rich! And I deeply want you to experience the richness that comes from interceding together and on behalf of a brother or sister. My heart desires to see my children praying like this for one another, not because mom prompts them too but because the Holy Spirit does. BUT it starts with me. It starts with me praying out loud with them, for others in front of them.

Remember.

Teach them to your children and your children’s children. Altars made of stone … to remember. Stories told to remember and honor. To pass on from one generation to another, a faith in God that cannot be thwarted. A Legacy.

Today we do not build altars, we have no need. But today we are in need of remembering.

Remembering the sacrifice the Father made for us and the suffering the Son endured for us.

He is Risen!

He is Risen Indeed!

Hosanna in the Highest!

Death has been conquered! We have been redeemed!

Jesus Rose From the Tomb & Now Sits at the Right Hand of God the Father Almighty!

The church declares in remembrance every year, the Lord has risen. But do we live in the power of the Spirit by which He rose? Do we truly remember? And are we teaching our children, helping them to know of what He has done? Introducing them to the God who can save their souls?

I feel ill equipped at times to battle all the wordly distractions the holidays bring, don’t you? SP many questions to ask ourselves as parents? Do we “do” the Easter Bunny? If we don’t, will they miss out, feel deprived, what will others say? How will we make Easter fun, memorable?

During my early years as a mother, these questions bombarded my mind, I felt compelled not to practice all the world did because I felt it simply distracted from all the potential this season of remembering could hold–what it was intended to. But I also didn’t want to come across as judgemental or “extreme.” Oh the decisions a mother and father make…

Now after 12 years of parenting, we have added enough “traditions” or “rituals” that point to Jesus and with hopes and aspirations for more that we don’t have time to worry about “Easter Bunnies” or other sorts of highlights our culture focuses on. Now the traditions we implement, are just as enriching for us adults as the children and help lead us into an even deeper reflection, reminding us of what Christ endured, suffered, and paid for us all when He redeemed us.

This can be an enriching season for us all spiritually when we choose to fill this early spring season with rituals or traditions that leave eternal impact and can be used by the Holy Spirit to do a lasting work in our hearts and the hearts of our children.

Here is one of our family’s traditions~

Austin, age 6, making a cross for Resurrection Sunday out of our old Christmas tree!

Every year the boys take turns working on creating the Resurrection Cross to help remind us of the sacrifice and triumph of our Lord and Savior.

Last year was Drew’s first year {he’s 5yrs old in the picture} sawing off every branch, sanding it down, binding it together with twine and nails and then carrying it into the house. He truly surprised me. His focus, determination to get the job done, even in the rain, was inspirational.

What family rituals or traditions do you embrace every year to teach and remember the sacrifice and resurrection of our Redeemer?

Winter weighs heavy on me, a smothering blanket of cold, gray-skied days. I consume too much coffee and long for the comfort of a good book and my bed. Winter can feel like a dead season, and me, well, I’m not much for winter–it’s too hard.

In the hollows of these longer winter afternoons I find comfort in remembering, for everything there is a season.

This is true in nature and in our lives. Lent is a bit of a dark season. As we reflect on Christ’s suffering and death, we can feel the weight of glory pressing down on us. This season of self-reflection and repentance can be a time of great struggle–and healing.

God is light and yet living in the light of Christ doesn’t exclude us from seasons of struggle and darkness. We know that we will face trial and pain in this world (John 16:33closeJohn 16:33

33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (ESV)

), but God works in the darkness. The hard times when our faith feels flat and our lives are messy, wrought with challenges and emotional upheaval–these winters are necessary and good–even when we cannot see that from where we stand.

In both scripture and nature we see the value of time in the dark. Jonah spent three days in the belly of a fish. Three long, dark, agonizing days waiting for God to speak, to move, to act. He surely thought this was the end. But this time was a gift for Jonah, an opportunity to reflect on the shape of his heart, allowing him time to repent from his self-righteousness and judgement on Nineveh.

We have lived seasons where the weight of this fallen world threatens to be our undoing. The burden of sin bares down hard and we beg for mercy while we wait in the dark–wait for God to act. This is the refining we are called to. This is not a useless season.

Tulips must be planted in the fall in order to bloom in the spring. They need time in the soil, in the dark, during the winter, in order to bloom, come spring. The darkness is not something to run from. The furnace of refinement is not something to fear.

This is the time to stand still, to listen to what he’s whispering, and to allow Him to strip you of the covers you’ve been hiding under. Trust me when I say, you’ve not got anything He hasn’t seen before. Stand in this fire, let Him purify you–this is how He loves us. This is the process of sanctification. ~Holey, Wholly, Holy: A Lenten Journey Of Refinement

In the barrenness of winter, we wait anxiously for spring. We watch for new life, and as the first tender shoots make their way through the last thin veil of snow, we rejoice at this light breaking through dark soil. These silvery crocus buds are blooms of hope–a reminder that out of these hard times, growth comes.

The truth of the Christian life is that we grow most in our faith through adversity. ~Holey, Wholly, Holy: A Lenten Journey of Refinement

As Easter approaches, we know we can endure the long winter that comes before. We remember that after the crucifixion, there was a period of darkness. For three days, God was silent. And then, resurrection–hope lives.

After enduring a difficult refining season myself, I poured my experience and Christ-centered encouragement into a book for others who also seek to grow through their struggles. Holey, Wholly, Holy: A Lenten Journey of Refinement, explores the necessity of enduring the refining seasons, and offers encouragement to others who are facing the heat of the Refiners Fire.
